Karola Obermüller (Germany) Obermüller studied piano, cello, conducting and composition with composers such as Cord Meijering, Volker Blumenthaler, Theo Brandmüller and Adriana Hölszky (Mozarteum Salzburg). She is currently pursuing her doctorate in the Department of Music at Harvard University, studying with Bernard Rands, Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Chaya Czernowin, Magnus Lindberg and Julian Anderson. She has received awards such as the Bavarian Youth Prize for Composition, the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer's Award, the Bohemians New York Musicians Club Prize and the Darmstädter Musikpreis 2006. Obermüller has participated in IRCAM’s Composition and Computer Music Course and received a stipend for a residency at the Centro Tedesco di Studi Veneziani in Venice.Obermüller is a scholarship holder of the Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik Darmstadt and of the Akademie Musiktheater heute. She has recently been commissioned by Staatstheater Nürnberg to write the opera Dunkelrot, which will be premiered there in September 07. She has collaborated with orchestras like the RSO Saarbrücken and the Orchestre National de Lorraine, with ensembles such as the Arditti Quartett (London), Nouvel Ensemble Moderne (Montréal), White Rabbit (Boston), North/South Consonance (New York City), Ensemble Phorminx and KlangKonzepteEnsemble (Germany), and with musicians like Makiko Goto, Petra Hoffmann, Carin Levine, Frances-Marie Uitti and Jeremias Schwarzer.
